Eat DESSERTS First!”

OK now, why should I eat desserts before the meal and never after? It sounds like a good thing to me and anytime I talk about this in one of my seminars, EVERYONE perks up. A hot topic for me! Here’s the reason why.

There are 2 kinds of digestion, MECHANICAL and CHEMICAL.

The Mechanical is the chewing and churning of the food as it moves through us. The Chemical is the Saliva, Stomach & Intestinal Juices, etc.

Our food breaks down before it’s absorbed into the blood stream in 4 areas; 1) Mouth, 2) Stomach, 3) Duodenum, 4) Jejunum. Simply put, Stages 1,2,3 & 4. Let’s keep this simple. The only food that breaks down in the stomach chemically is Protein and the fibrous foods take a long time to chemically digest there as well. Now you have a valve entering the stomach very much like a check valve that will allow the food to enter the stomach and during the churning process, the food won’t back up into your throat. This is really called the Cardia Sphincter. Then there is a valve that acts like the Cardia Valve (Sphincter) that is at the base of the stomach which allow s the food to go through the stomach and not to back up into the stomach after is passed through. This Valve is called the Pyloric Valve (Sphincter). So far this sounds very technical, but it’s now getting simple.

If we eat desserts before the meal then they have a chance to pass through the stomach very quickly where they begin their digestion and they can’t back up into the stomach. This way when you wait at least 45 minutes after eating desserts then you can eat that properly combined meal which will probably take at least 1-2 hours breaking down in the stomach while the dessert is on it’s merry way through the rest of the Digestive System.

But it you eat the dessert AFTER the meal then it will stay in the stomach a way too long mixing with the meal and fermenting (rotting) causing what we know as Indigestion. Then rather than looking for the cause of the indigestion, we look for something to kill the aggravation our body is telling us it’s going through. If we keep this practice up desserts before the meal long enough, then we will evolve into a state of Pathology (Evolution of Disease) that a lot of times is a real bear to try and rise above. EAT DESSERTS FIRST and enjoy them to the fullest if you are accustomed to eating them.

A Healthy Holiday Happenin’!

Happy holidays everyone!

I’m always asked when I do a seminar with the dietary principles I espouse what to prepare for the Big Holiday Feasts of desserts, lots of prepared vegetable dishes and of course the meat of your choice. And what can you do at this event to get the most out of the meal with the least aggravation on the body. Or what can a person do when they are invited out? Well actually there is a way you can sit down to the big holiday bash and still walk away not totally miserable from overeating or just eating the wrong things in bad combinations. This is the simplest way to do it and you can still eat those desserts and the mashed potatoes, turnips, vegetables and the meat of your choice! Normally after we eat those feasts, we usually find ourselves in front of the TV dozing off for a couple hours. Well check this out!

Usually we spend a good 2 – 3 hours eating and enjoying good conversation. Since the holidays sort of make us slow down with our busy schedules to get together, there’s usually quite a bit of conversation to catch up on. So the time goes by pretty fast. Now then we spend another hour or so napping. Wouldn’t it be just as easy to spend a couple hours at this feast and walk away feeling terrific? Here’s a good procedure: If you eat the desserts first and wait about 45-60 minutes, then you can enjoy all the starches with some other vegetables. Wait about 1 - 2 hours before eating the greens and the meat of your choice and you will have a Healthy Holiday Happenin’! About as good of digestion as you can get and you can still enjoy all the goodies. Let me hear from you on this one! I am amazed at how many letters we get from those who attend our seminars telling us how much they appreciate such logic during the holidays and still not feel the least bit deprived or insult the host if you eat your holiday feast out! Notice it takes just about the same time to do it right and not deprive yourself of anything you enjoy than it is to do it normally and feel stuffed afterwards and tend to fall asleep to boot!

I always encourage my clients and my audience to eat the desserts before the meal, not because of appeasing the sweet tooth so to speak, but it’s more physiologically sound for good digestion.

Hello again everyone and I trust each of you had a Happy Thanksgiving?!

I am often amused at how many folks refer to nutrition when they talk about “Supplements”. Let me set the record straight for all those who are proponents of supplements. Supplementation is NOT Nutrition. It’s just as it says, SUPPLEMENTATION! Here’s the best definition of Nutrition I can come up with. Nutrition is nothing more than a series of 4 Processes the body employs to make food materials for the body to use. It takes place without thought or conscious effort as it’s an innate response from the superior wisdom of the body we were born with. That’s all Nutrition is. It doesn’t heal, cure or do anything for that matter. It’s the body that does the processes.

Now let’s look at supplementation. Supplements are just that, supplements, not circumvents. We should be thinking of supplements (vitamins & minerals in the multitude of ways there are sold, i.e. pills, potions, lotions, etc.) as something to complement the meal not to take the place of the meal. So I’ve decided to do all these 22+ years in the business of nutrition is to teach the meal. If we can get the meal down then supplementation will serve us a lot better. And here’s an interesting thought, if vitamin supplements are suppose to make us feel better, then we should at some point get to where we don’t need them anymore, but it appears that we always increase the dosage as we go. It’s not my contention to pooh pooh supplements, but rather to put them in the proper perspective.

But then there’s so much confusion about this subject of just plain sensible eating that it was my quest to teach those who wanted more zest in their lives exactly how we are designed to eat. I will make this another article, but for now let’s understand that we all digest food exactly the same way which was the basis for “The Perfect Diet Program”! http://www.wayne-pickering.com I will make this challenge to anyone who is reading this e-mail that if you can prove me wrong on that statement I will buy you what you want. If you put horses in Africa, China or The fabulous United States, they will all digest food the same way, They are species specific. We are humans…species specific. We all digest food the same way. Now our needs may vary and the rate of efficiency of the way digest food may vary, but we all digest food the EXACT SAME WAY! Go to any Anatomy or Physiology book and you will NEVER find Wayne Pickering’s name, Judith Dacey or Nick or Darlene Nicholas’ names there! What you will find is where it says that in the mouth, we do it this way. In the stomach, we do it this way and so forth right on through the entire alimentary canal!

But let’s give supplementation the benefit of the doubt here. A classic line by the Great Joe Marino, a fellow speaker friend of mine in Jacksonville, Florida, “nobody likes change except a wet baby!” It has helped me to understand why it’s easier to get someone to change their marriage; their job, their religion or even their home than it is to change their diet. Also, people would rather take a quality supplement than to make a lot of changes in their diet. I guess it’s a comfort zone type of thing. Well we had to address this and design our own line of high potent, quality, totally safe herbal line of supplements! We were adamant about this as our reputation was at stake and I’ve learned that it take years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. I will close with saying that no matter what anyone else tries to tell you, the bottom line is “If we want to be tough, we have to eat good stuff!” Treat yourself to the very best as you are the best you got. How old do we get before we get to? Stay terrific!

I get a lot of requests all the time to show people how to stay Motivated to be Healthy. I think it’s very easy when you’ve been as sick and miserable and fat as I’ve been at different stages of my life. Each time I needed to quit abusing myself with either drugs; cigarettes, booze, running around with reckless women (which is still one of my on going challenges) and the like, it was always to a point to where I had to do it as my health started suffering more than the pleasure I was getting from the things I was doing that were not healthy. So those memories stick out in my head a lot. And of course I deviate every so often and man oh man, do I pay the price for it.

To coat tail a portion of a phrase of Zig Ziglar’s, I tweaked it this way, “People always want what they want when the want exceeds the effort!” I wanted to be healthy, so “I became interested in what makes me tick when I got fed up with what was making me sick!” I actually thought being healthy was something esoteric, i.e. for the select few. You had to be born into it or something crazy like that. I finally came to realize that we’re all healthy automatically by design and sick only by default. Then I took responsibility for my actions. Now I’m rewarded greatly with lots of energy, I’m able to cope with stress so much better and am never sick. Another lesson here is, “We never catch disease, we earn it and it stems from crud in the blood from being drunk with junk!”

Now keeping motivated is not the key here. Motivation is nothing more than something to get you going…HABIT is what keeps you going. So here are 5 habits that help me to keep going all the time (and I have to thank the great Marc LeBlanc in LaJolla, CA for his encouragement here):

  1. One of the first things I do in the morning is I either walk 1 mile by going down to the post office or the bank to run an errand to get the day going or I go out in the backyard to bounce on my trampoline for about 5-10 minutes. This is another great benefit of a home based business, your 24 hours is all your own and you’re not cashing it in for someone else’s gain.

  2. I always drink 2 glasses of water in the morning and 2 glasses in the afternoon and as much else as I want throughout the day, but at least I get those 4 glasses in each day (Remembering never to drink “The Crap from the Tap”). A good lesson here is: YOU DON’T HAVE TO DRINK 8 GLASSES OF WATER A DAY, you need about 8 glasses of fluid a day but it doesn’t have to be all water. It could be in the form of fresh fruit or vegetable juices! Isn’t that good news?

  3. I ALWAYS START THE DAY WITH DELICIOUS, FRESH, SUCCULENT FRUIT THAT’S IN SEASON.

  4. I evaluate myself every 30 days to monitor my progress and stickability!

  5. I always reward myself with great things by never beating myself up over a few deviations. I try to keep a phrase in my mind that the impeccable Rosita Perez said one time that’s really hits the mark, “Let go of Perfection and Settle for Excellence!” Isn’t that a classic from a classy lady?

I have had to come to the realization that I’m a special person with an unnegotiable self-worth and I’m always untying the ribbon to this gift of the only true thing we really have and that’s our health. Without it, we are NOTHING! That’s how I keep motivated.

Hey everyone!

When I present my seminars to an audience and they are all jazzed about finally finding the RIGHT way to eat after much confusion over the years about this subject of NUTRITION, a new question always comes up. “WHERE DO I GET SOME OF THESE FRUITS AND OTHER GREAT THINGS TO EAT THAT YOU ESPOUSE?” Well I thought it would be great, since so many of us are on the road and eat out a lot as well as stay in a lot of hotels, to have a reliable source of practically everything available when we want it. When I travel I always have a back up for those times when it’s almost impossible to get the kind of food we really want to eat. I refuse to eat junk as my body is not a garbage dump with a hairy lid. This is my corporate headquarters and since I own 100% stock in this blue chip corporation, I don’t think it would be good business sense to sell my stock too cheap by eating less than the best!

Hello everyone and welcome to a new week of something healthy to help keep you around longer so a lot of lives you are making a positive difference with can enjoy you just that much longer.

Since this is winding down on the mango season, I have had so many requests to show you how to eat mangoes in a not so sloppy manner. Well I can end this article right here as there’s no way I know of to eat them without some juice here and there. But here’s an easy way to enjoy them. Stand the mango upright where the stem end is at the bottom. You’ll notice that there’s a flatter side of the mango and we call this the cheek. Cut down the mango to get as much of the cheek from the seed as you can. Then do the other side the same way. Now you have 2 cheeks. Peel the skin off the seed and eat that over a dish or the sink. Then a rule of thumb is to have some dental floss around, as there’s always room for that when you eat mangoes.

Now to the cheeks. You can scoop the mango out with a spoon in bite size pieces and not have that major mess to worry about. I am producing a new video on all this plus how to select the best fruit and vegetables when you are shopping; how to store it when you get home and a few recipes to help get you on a roll with a healthier eating plan. But this should get you by until the video becomes a reality. Another plus if you are on an island or in the tropical south where the sun is very hot, I used to rub my shoulders with the inside of the rinds as it’s an excellent source of suntan oil. It’s sticky but if you’re close to the ocean there’s no problem here. Anyway, enjoy my very favorite fruit and the most popular fruit in the world; ”THE MANGO”!

Let’s dispel the myth about the proper kind of water to drink. My first comment is that we can’t get clean water out of a dirty pipe. And when I interviewed all those Olympic athletes a few years back about what they do to maintain their health & energy on a busy travel schedule (which will be another article for you in a couple months…watch for it, it’s a good one), one of the 3 things they all had in common was and I say this verbatim, “Wayne, we never drink the crap from the tap!” That statement has changed a lot of people’s thinking about better water to drink!

In his book, “The Choice is Clear”, by Dr. Allen E. Banik, he describes Distilled Water as “the only water that is pure – the only water free from all impurities.”

Distilled Water acts as a solvent in the body. It dissolves food substances so they can be assimilated and taken into every cell. It dissolves inorganic mineral substance, acid crystals and all other waste products so that these can be eliminated in the process of purifying the body.

As Distilled Water enters the body, it picks up mineral deposits accumulated in the joints, artery walls or wherever such deposits occur, and begin to carry then out. Gallstones & Kidney Stones decrease until they can safely pass through their ducts. Arthritic pains lessen, as joints become more supple & movable!

Distilled Water has the inherent characteristics of a magnet which picks discarded minerals and with the assistance of the blood and the lymph, transports then to the kidneys for elimination. It is this kind of mineral elimination that is erroneously referred to as leaching.
