Work-Life Balance Conundrum

AchievementRadio.com's

Work-Life Balance Conundrum

Work-Life Balance Conundrum
By Andrea Chilcote

Success is a matter of prioritizing - sometimes each second - a multitude of decisions based on one's clear choices and values.

Balance means things are equal. They are not.

How provocative, this subject of work-life balance. The very word balance is itself controversial.

  • Does balance exist, or is the act of combining a career and a life outside that career a perpetual test of one's ability to prioritize?
  • Can meaningful, purposeful work even be thought of as separate from or partitioned outside of one's "life?"
  • Are those that struggle with finding balance really struggling with finding and living in integrity with their own identity, versus who others might want or imagine them to be?

For the answers to these questions, I talked with colleagues that are concerned with this topic, both as senior leaders in their organizations and in their own personal lives.

Is Balance a Bad Choice of Words?

Linda Fitzpatrick, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Hyseq Pharmaceuticals, works three-day weeks, focusing the rest of her time on family, community and friends. At this stage in a vibrant career that has included a role as Investor Relations Lead during the Genentech merger with Roche Pharmaceuticals, she has absolutely no ambiguity about her current choices, which she says are very different than balance. "Balance means things are equal. They are not."

It's all about the choices we make - consciously. "I do not buy the idea of balance," says Fitzpatrick. "I don't think it exists. If there is balance, everyone gets the lowest common denominator. I do believe in choices. Choices give us options and opportunities and it is in acting on those choices that we are in a position of strength."

Priorities and choices do have consequences; indeed Fitzpatrick admits that while she is highly valued in her role at work, the company would like to have more of her.

Fitzpatrick may have cleared up one conundrum with her comments. Some colleagues I spoke to about this issue, while very clear about their values, choices and priorities, often said: "I feel very out of balance most of the time." Perhaps this is because certain roles or areas of focus take the spotlight at different times in our lives. If we have chosen to focus on those areas, consciously, maybe we need to relax about the others that are less important.

The Question of Purpose

Kathleen Orlay just left her position as National Director of Leadership and Executive Development for Cox Communications. An author, poet, musician and close friend to many, Orlay is bringing her work and talent to a broader audience via her own consulting practice. She made this choice based on her desire to express her creativity in more personally authentic ways.

While agreeing philosophically with Fitzpatrick, Orlay does not view balance as meaning that all things are equal. She sees balance as a symmetry or centered-ness. "The magic is in being able to step back and find your clear sense of center, or source."

The idea that real clarity comes from a much deeper, even spiritual source was a repeated theme. "Who I am at the core is what my work is," says Orlay. "And that shows up in the many roles I play in life, my job being only one of them. When you love your work, the distinction between life and work blurs." In fact, this past year she looked in this mirror herself to arrive at her career decision.

Diane Liguori is Vice President of Human Resources for CV Therapeutics. Her family consists of her husband, two teenage stepsons, a three-year-old, and a 20-month-old. She says that one of the greatest gifts she can give her children is being a role model for doing work that you love and that is purposeful. She is quite clear that success is a matter of prioritizing - sometimes each second - a multitude of decisions based on one's clear choices and values.

Diane Liguori spoke about purpose; "why we are here," and said that ultimately, the choices we make in integrity are born from that place. If our work is meaningful to us, our companies certainly benefit, and, according to Liguori, our other relationships benefit as well. She cites the importance, to her, of having her children see their parents doing work they love.

We Live in a World of Judgment

People who have the anxiety under control generally acknowledge the distinction between trying to do what other people want or expect you to do, versus following your own conscience, heart or value system. While the urge to be popular, to please, or "to do it all" tempts at every decision point, those that suffer less stress or anxiety appear to be those who are clear about who they are.

Rebecca Gardiner is Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics for Connetics Corporation. She describes herself as an "intense classic overachiever." Gardiner derives her sense of fulfillment from being able to powerfully contribute through a strategic role at work, while nurturing a young family. She does not believe in or give in to outsider's expectations as to how she should manage her life.

Gardiner knows the difference between growing, loving, and nurturing her family and being able to cook and clean like June Cleaver. She can distinguish between society's often-misguided expectations and her own comfort in who she is and what works for her.

Liguori would also have us save the stress for what matters. What are the true "I have to's?" she asks herself, sometimes on an hour-by-hour basis. She can do that because she is quite clear about who and what is important in her life. Stress from shuffling and juggling schedules to meet your own needs, for example, is very different from the stress of feeling victimized by other people's demands and expectations. Fitzpatrick says: "Making choices based upon one's priorities is very different from being a victim of the inevitable."

So regardless of the definition you hold for the word "balance," the message from these four women living the challenge is clear: at any given moment, or at any stage of life we have the capacity to make choices and live our lives from those choices. And, if our decisions are made from a place of clarity about who we are and what we want, they free rather than restrict. The notion that flexibility and focus are mutually exclusive is false; in fact one's fulfillment in work and in life may depend on balancing these two qualities, versus balancing work and life itself.

Daily Affirmations

Daily Affirmations

Daily Affirmations
By Kaylie L Holbrook

Using daily affirmations can help you achieve the goals that you have. Although it does not seem like a complicated process, the results can be astounding. Repeating positive affirmations to yourself throughout the day will encourage change.

So, How do daily affirmations work? We are constantly influenced by our thoughts, both positive and negative. Even our subconscious mind plays a big role in the outcome of our goals. By using positive daily affirmations you have the ability to train your mind, which in turn helps to manifest the things that you desire. This process can change our beliefs about ourselves, which in turn empowers us and gives us the thoughts and actions that we need to get closer to our desires.

Using positive thinking will set the intention for your goal, and if you repeat the positive affirmations often they will be implanted in your mind. Understand that it is ok to desire something that you don't already have. If you really believe that you can have it then it will come.

There are different exercises that you can do to help keep your daily affirmations forefront in your mind. Some people like to write them down and keep them in a noticeable place. Others like to repeat the positive affirmations over and over in the morning and evening. Be comfortable saying your daily affirmations, repeat them and say them with conviction until your desire is manifested in your life.

Be sure that you are using daily affirmations in a correct process-- the structure of the statements is very important to your success. Use positive statements in the present tense. Also, as you are repeating the statements to yourself, say them with as much energy and excitement that you can. The daily affirmations will be more effective if they are repeated with feeling and desire.

Using positive affirmations on a daily basis will create your new reality, and soon you will be happy with the new attitude that you are experiencing.

What Your Mindset Say About You

AchievementRadio.com's

What Your Mindset Say About You

What Your Mindset Say About You
By Richard Butler

Believe it or not there's many different types of mindset out there. One that is particularly common is one I call "employee mindset" - the mindset most people have. You see most people believe that "other people" become rich, run their own business and have everything they want in life.

Let's look at employee mindset:

They believe that a job is something you do from 9 - 5 (sometimes earlier and sometimes later)

You get pay check at the end of every week/month.

This paycheck is never really enough.

Once a year you might be lucky to get a pay raise - in the region of 2% - 10%

Some of the things that people with the employee mindset do is:

Everyday you have to travel to work also known as the commute.

You work for someone else and they profit from your ideas and your work.

Work is something to do and is not always enjoyable .

Where does the employee mindset come from?

From talking to people and researching, I believe it comes from our upbringing. You know we're told work hard, don't copy from others, go to college, get a job, be happy with it, get married, buy a house, have kids, etc....

This is the "dream" we are sold. We're never really encouraged to take chances, take risks, try our own business etc.

REALITY CHECK

There's no such thing anymore as a secure job - sure maybe in my fathers time there was, but not now. Now a days there's no security in your job any more, any day now they could call you in and tell you you're gone.

Employee mindset is limited in every way:

Creativity

Salary

Prospects

Man's Holiness

AchievementRadio.com's

Man's Holiness

Man's Holiness
By Abraham Adar

Man's holiness may represent the most important and valuable thing that is within us. Such a thing could only be our high self-worth, a very special value, which cannot be estimated by money; which can only be compared to the value of the divine or of its holiness, due to His declaration that we were created in His image.

Man's holiness is therefore that spiritual content which typifies the essence of his creation born in God's image. If we can express our high self-worth, we can express that holiness within us, can emphasize the divine part of ourselves and thus give a practical expression to the idea of man's being created in God's own image. Therefore, sanctifying the other, means raising his self-esteem or providing the other with this content. Stemming from this, is that the meaning of being sanctified is to be filled with this content.

Desecrating holiness means damaging it, harming the unique value, which creates the tight bond between man and God, thereby indirectly harming God's holiness as well. Any man's expression of hatred, non-recognition, disregard towards another, hurts his value and holiness, thus impinges on the sanctity of the divine. However, it is true that occasionally the person himself causes his own injury, due to his actions, reactions and positions. In doing so, he hurts his own holiness as well as that of God.

Man's primary obligation is to express his high self-worth, not in order to receive a good grade, but because through this attitude he expresses the essence which was instilled in him by his Creator. I would like to present two divine declarations, which supply a very strong motivation for giving expression to man's holiness, namely, giving expression to his unique self-worth:

"Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy" (Leviticus 19:2). Meaning, you shall posses a unique self-worth, since that is how I Myself am (possessing an absolute self-worth). Possessing such a value signifies acting and behaving as the possessor of such a value. The things said following this declaration, teach how man must act and behave in order to possess a unique self-worth. Here are some of these declarations:

"Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind; Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man; Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;

And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him; But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt."

In this way, God hints that if you implement his instructions in this chapter, you will be holy in his eyes, namely, you will possess a unique self-worth, and then you will certainly be this way in your own eyes too. This is a further wonderful encouragement given to man for raising his self-worth, pointing yet again to the importance of man's high self-worth in God's eyes.

"Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the Lord; Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the Lord which hallow you" (Leviticus 22:31-32). Meaning, if you preserve and properly carry out my commandments, your self-worth will be such, that you will not harm another, and therefore you will not be harming my value, my holiness. In this way, your level of holiness will be such that- I who sanctified you - will come to be sanctified within you. And there you have an additional divine encouragement; nothing could exceed it.

Abraham Adar, the author of the book "Man and the realization of his purpose", which guides man to realize his purpose through deciphering the Pentateuch's divine wisdom. Some material from the book as well as additional information is presented in his website.

Self Realization

Self Realization

Self Realization
By Sangeetha Kannan

I got the below quoted words through a forward "Do not spoil what you have, by desiring what you do not have. Because, what you have now,is one of the many things, you desired for ......"

I realised that they are so true.

Why do I say that?

Origin of desire: When I was a child, my dad once took me to this local bank. He made me sit in a chair and walked away to withdraw some money. I was so intimidated by the entire atmosphere, that i was totally shrinking in my chair. Then, I heard this bell go and the announcement of some token number on the speaker. The lady sitting by my side, walked to the cashier. The cashier, who was behind a grilled window, though was having a conversation with the lady, was counting a wad of cash with perfect speed and precision. I was so awestruck by this that I was not able to take my eyes off him. He then delivered the cash to the lady with a smile. I saw him repeat the same process with each of his customers' with the same dedication, politeness and speed. I also noticed that all the people were so full of respect and admiration for this guy. I was so overwhelmed (He was my HERO now:) ) by what I saw in the bank that, on the way back, I was thinking how nice it would be if I could be in his position.

Desire Granted:The time I completed my PG , was when the IT industry had tasted dust. So, I ended up taking a front office OFFICER job in a bank. After a lot of initial teething troubles, I finally ended up in the CASHIER cubicle that I had so innocently dreamed of as a child. But u know what, I hated every moment that I spent inside that. It was not all that glamorous and easy as it had looked before and yes I had to pay through my nose for the SHORTS in cash , that used to come at times.

Net Result: After reading the forward, I realized that, though my desire had been granted to me, the implication of same dawned on me only later. I had felt that fate was cruel to me in dealing such a blow on me. While the fact remains that, I had asked for it. Now I realize that when you wish for something, it is a conscious and matured call that you take. So what we are desiring for now and not getting - may actually be a blessing in disguise.

Constantly monitoring your thoughts and emotions, for me is extremely hard...But you will learn that this has everything to do with everything. And If you have that burning desire to live Your life to the fullest of your ability you are definitely on the right path...

Let's Get The Most Out Of Life

Let's Get The Most Out Of Life
By Kevin White

" If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got." - Jackie "Moms" Mabley

How true is that! Most of us live on a schedule that is basically planned out from day to day, and month to month. If that makes you happy and provides for the ones you love most, the I would recommend doing what you've always done.

But, what if you are the one who often gets upset at what life has to offer? What if you are unhappy with the results of your day to day routine? I've been this person for most my adult life. I have grown to learn that things want change unless I try to change things. I said try, because most of us can't change our lives or routines overnight. There are so many opportunities out here waiting for us to take advantage. Sometime it is just simple things that can help (exercise, prayer, volunteering time, etc.).

Life is precious, beautiful, and a blessing that we take for grantite. We can do so much more than we feel we are capable of doing. We can give so much more than we feel we are capable of giving. Giving doesn't have to consist of money in the physical form. Mentally we can challenge ourselves to recognize each opportunity that we have to give. After all, giving is better than receiving, and it feels so good when someone says "Thank You".

So, Lets Get The Most Out Of Life!

Divine Answers

Divine Answers

Divine Answers
By Sharmaine Hobbs

Have you ever been at a point where you felt you were on the brink of something wonderful and just needed to know the next step to take? Have you ever wanted to accomplish something, but did not know how to get started? Have you ever felt like a breakthrough was eminent if you could only connect the dots? Have you needed guidance on your best options, but didn't know who to turn to for advice? I had the same experience and found out two things: that God sometimes answers prayer through email and to pay attention to what I feel inspired to do after I pray for guidance.

I constantly strive to keep my thoughts, feelings, and actions in alignment with my heart's desire. Sometimes it is hard work to keep them all in harmony. It creates a flow in my life and makes it easier to fulfill my purpose. Not long ago I turned my attention to a goal I wanted to achieve. One of my favorite ways of receiving help is to write a prayer to God on the computer asking for the guidance and inspiration that I need. Normally the prayers are long and I pour my whole heart out on paper, but on this particular day, my prayer was simple and straightforward. I asked him to direct my path and give me the insight and wisdom that I needed. I then proceeded to move forward with my day.

I felt inspired to start my day by clearing out the 600 emails that were stored on my computer. I would only work on this for 15 minutes. This is normally a difficult task because I love to go back through them and read all of the inspirational emails that I've held onto because they move me and nourish my soul. After scanning through several of them, about 13 spoke directly to what I had just prayed about. I really got inspired and checked my new emails and I opened one from One Day Decorating.

What I prayed about didn't have anything to do with decorating, but the email had a quote that I loved. I emailed the author to tell her how timely it was because of my prayer and the goal I was working on. She emailed me back and graciously sent me her phone number and offered to share her experiences with me. We had a wonderful 45 minute conversation (free of charge) and she gave me several options to birth my project. I felt like I was walking on water. The next email I opened was from a women's group requesting that I speak at their next women's meeting. This nudged me to jot down how many other women's groups I could share my pilot program with. Another email contained a discount coupon for printing and I immediately placed my order for the print materials, feeling like this step would breathe life into my goal.

This flurry of activity happened over about a two hour time span. I wrote a prayer asking for help and then I got into action. That action was the gateway that produced the answers I had just prayed about. The free consult came as a result of me expressing gratitude to someone whose words had also been a part of the answer I needed. I made a quantum leap that morning towards achieving my goal because I was in alignment, I asked for help and then I took action. My divine answers came through heeding my inner guidance to clean out my inbox.

Be open to how you receive the answers that you need for your life. God used several emails to get me the help I needed. He has been known to speak through burning bushes and donkeys, but the answer you need today may not come in the dramatic way you may be expecting. It may just be on a billboard you drive by everyday. It could be on the bumper sticker of the car in front of you when you're stuck in traffic and you're frustrated even though the reason you are not moving is because you have to acknowledge the answer first. It might be the lyrics of a song on the radio. It could be on the page of a book you have been meaning to read or in the innocent conversation of a child. Expect your answers to come right when you need them. As you take action, and watch them show up before your very eyes and maybe even in your inbox.

A Quote To Inspire You

A Quote To Inspire You
By Catherine Pulsifer

Can a quote inspire you? We have found inspirational quotes can change our thinking. Quotes can inspire you, they can remind you of your goals, and they can be a positive influence to your day.

You don't need to keep a book of quotes, you only need to find that one quote that is appropriate for your situation. That one quote that will inspire you or remind you to live life to the fullest.

An example of two quotes that did just that for me:

1. For many years I kept the following quote on my desk: "What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it."

That quote would remind me not to spend my day thinking negative thoughts or waste my time or energy in complaining or wishing to be somewhere else. It reminded me to enjoy my day, to be all that I could be as once the day was over I would never have it back. .

2. Currently I am working on a project that requires a lot of time and patience. Some days I feel frustrated with my progress. I feel like I will never finish. So I the following quote gives me inspiration while working on my current project: "persistence prevails when all else fails"

When I find myself frustrated I look up and read that quote. It inspires me to continue. It reminds me of the story doing a little bit over time does pay off.

So find that quote that inspires you, keep it in a place where you can see it, and live each day to the fullest!

My Own Little Fork In The Road

AchievementRadio.com's

My Own Little Fork In The Road
By Myla Madson

I have this thing about driveways. Not that I have one anymore, not since mine was stolen right out from under me by the judicial system and the little gremlin of an attorney my ex-husband hired to represent him in the divorce.

I've recovered enough, at least financially, to the point of being able to purchase a run down little shack out in the sticks but could only afford the dirt that connects my humble abode to the street and not the asphalt that most homeowners put on top of that dirt and label a driveway.

Anyhow, this little strip of dirt is mine and it drives me absolutely nuts when some lost driver decides he's had enough of being lost, admits defeat, and looks for some place to turn around. Somehow my little dirt driveway seems to fit the bill, several times a day!

Very annoying when I'm outside and strangers keep pulling in and out, tearing up my dirt and all. I've put up a barrier to try and stop these lost souls, but unlike my distant neighbors, I have no drainage ditches on either side of the drive so they just pull right on up into the yard like it's theirs.

There doesn't seem to be much I can do about this problem so, as I've often done in the past, I've looked deeper into the situation in search of a hidden lesson and this is what I've been able to come up with.

I now think of my driveway as a point of reflection, a place to stop and make a decision of sorts; Not your symbolic fork in the road where a life altering decision must be made, but more a place where one can stop, think things over a bit and go back from whence they came.

Actually go back and get a "do over". The person inside that car sitting out in front of my house, invading my privacy, probably feels that perhaps they have made a wrong turn somewhere, maybe read the map wrong and instead of continuing on into the unknown, he has found a place to stop, assess the situation, safely turn himself around and head back to the point at which his mistake was made.

You don't always get this opportunity on life's many highways so I guess I'm only to happy to offer the service. In fact, on most highways, especially the one's my ex-husband was fond of driving on, you start heading in a certain direction, realize that perhaps you have made a monumental navigational mistake and before you can find an exit to get off of and turn around, you've crossed state lines and right beside you is that cute little hitch hiker of questionable age you picked up back there at that fork in the road and blue lights are flashing in the rear view mirror. Hey, supposedly these things can happen.

So, I now think of my little strip of dirt as being terribly important in the grand scheme of things, perhaps placed there by the very hand of God himself to help those that have lost their way. I can't allow myself to get upset with these people and I've reconsidered burying the large nails that I went so far as buying, out at the foot of my drive.

This reasoning will have to do for now because I can't afford to put up fences or gates or even have my little strip of dirt paved. I put some rocks down a few weeks ago but have only succeeded in making it that much easier to spot. I guess most who have lost their way are in quite a hurry to head back to more familiar ground to because they are always spinning their wheels and kicking my new gravel all over the yard. Wouldn't mind putting a few nails in those guy's tires!

Not nice, I know, and before you start to look down your nose at me, God has already done so in the form of weeds growing up through my new rocks where none would grow before in plain old dirt.

Oh, the moral of the story? Think about what you're doing when you ask him for a divorce!
