A Look At Writing As A Viable Home-Based Business Option

A Look At Writing As A Viable Home-Based Business Option

A Look At Writing As A Viable Home-Based Business Option
By Hope Wilbanks

For many new stay-at-home-moms and -dads, earning a respectable income at home becomes of utmost importance. After all, just because you're staying home with the kids, that doesn't mean you aren't capable of, or don't desire to earn your own money to contribute to your family's income. One at-home business venture many seek to capitalize upon is providing a writing service.

Here's the big question: Is writing a feasible work-at-home business option? Let's take a closer look at this, then you can make the decision for yourself.

Writing Is A Service-Based Business The first thing to note about writing is that it is a service-based business for most. Every writer I know got his or her start in the writing world by offering certain writing services to other businesses.

The online world of marketing makes writing appear to be a tasty business venture for lots, especially those with natural writing talent and ability. With Internet Marketers creating a high demand for quality content, writing seems to be one of the best and most lucrative businesses for someone just starting out. But is it really?

Writing is first and foremost a service-based business. What this means is that you must constantly market yourself as someone who offers a service to another business owner.

Service by definition means work done by one person or group that benefits another. Building a writing business means you will be writing content that will benefit someone else--not you. You'll be expected to produce content according to your clients' specifications, receiving no fringe benefits from any profit gained through use of your written content.

Some writers don't have any problems with this type of business model. They simply love writing and don't mind being responsible for turning out endless content that they'll be paid for up front.

Writing Is (Most Often) A Thankless Job Very few writers hear a word of thanks for a job well done from their clients. Even the most loyal clients often forget to say, "Wow! You really outdid yourself on this piece!"

There are some exceptions to this rule. Jennifer Dize, a freelance writer, shares:

"I am lucky to have great clients that do thank me and appreciate my writing. There are some that don't even let me know they've received it which makes me nervous (and requires more follow up), but for the most part they are courteous."

So for the most part, unless you're one of the few lucky ones who receives frequent encouragement, you'll be writing lots of content in return for very little interaction with your clients.

This is attractive to some writers who consider themselves introverts. Some would prefer to be left alone to simply write, without extra or unnecessary interaction. But if you're a writer who needs to hear those encouraging comments from time to time, then you should seriously consider this before offering your services as a writer.

Another thing to keep in mind is that by offering writing services to other business owners, you are essentially ghostwriting, whether or not you word it that way on your website or in your contract. As a ghostwriter, you are the silent partner, who does all the work but gets zero credit. You should ask yourself if you are truly willing to be paid to write content that you will not get credit for.

Furthermore, the content you write can only be unique for your clients. It can't be some rehashed or rewritten content from you or anyone else. In addition, your clients will most likely require you to sign an agreement that basically signs away all your rights. Meaning, you will never be able to use that content in any form or fashion again.

You May Not Always Be Paid What You're Worth This especially holds true in the beginning of your business start-up. For the first year, you'll probably feel obligated to accept work that you loathe at rates that are well beneath what you are worth. Writers tend to do this, thinking that they must pay their dues. While in some sense this is true, it is equally untrue that you must work for nothing in order to make ends meet.

Freelancer Lucinda Reynolds writes:

"If you price too low, you can get bombarded with work but you will never have any free time and you will be stressed trying to deliver all of the orders in a timely manner. But on the other end, if you price too high you will have a tough time finding the clients that are willing to pay for the service. People still have the mentality that writers are "poor" or shouldn't be paid a reasonable sum for their work. It can be hard to find that middle ground that will make both you and the client happy."

Another big problem for freelance service writers is getting paid when the work is done. Way too many writers do work on "spec" which essentially means they're giving their client (in most cases, a total stranger they don't even know) a line of credit. The writer does the work, then contacts the client with an invoice. Far too often, the writer then ends up waiting for weeks, sometimes months even, to be paid.

Some freelancers today are starting to catch on though and are beginning to require at least half the total amount due up front before they begin the project. Still others, like myself, require the full amount in full before beginning the project, making very few exceptions to the rule.

When I started out, my rates were pretty low. Too low, in fact. I set rates according to the "standard" as set by other WAHM "authority" figures. Looking back now, I realize that I should have valued my worth then and simply set my rates according to my level of experience.

Since then, my rates have significantly increased. Not all at once, but over a period of a few years. I value my time and my writing much more now than I did back then. To get what you're worth, you first have to understand and acknowledge how much your time and energy is worth to you. Then and only then will others begin to value it as well.

Writers Work Long Hours I've talked to a lot of writers throughout the years. A lot of writers I know who offer their services to other business owners often reach burnout points, and quite frequently.

Such writers rarely take vacations. Their health begins to suffer because they are spending too much time in front of a computer screen. They neglect family time and don't exercise anymore. They basically live at the computer, eating meals there, and writing at all hours of the day and night, trying to keep their heads above water.

The biggest reason why writers find themselves in this position is because their prices are too low. They end up taking on more and more work in an effort to meet their desired monthly or weekly income. And then at some point they realized they've bitten off more than they can chew. Now they've got a boat-load of writing to be done and not nearly enough time to do it in. Frustration kicks in, and some writers even become depressed, seeing no end in sight.

Does this sound familiar? I've been through this myself and it's not a pretty sight. You become so entangled with all the work on your desk that you feel like you can hardly breathe. It becomes unbearable and you have to keep burning the candle at both ends just to stay even.

The Bottom Line Having read all this, you're probably wondering why in the world I, a writer, am saying such things. I'm saying it because it's the truth. I'm saying it because I want every person who is considering starting a writing business to go into it with eyes wide open.

Writing is a wonderful thing. But to start, run and manage a writing business, you have to have extremely thick skin, be able to put in many hours, and can market yourself more than you write. No matter how much work you manage to get, at some point it will all be finished. And unless you give marketing 65-85% of your time, you won't keep work.

Lots of service-based writers find themselves at an impasse at some point. Burned out, frustrated, lonely, and tired they wonder if it's even worth it anymore. Many will discover that it isn't.

While some writers enjoy writing for others, they long to turn writing into a personal income venture, rather than a service based business. Yet they aren't sure how to make the switch, or they can't find the time to devote to their own personal writing projects.

Jenn Dize says:

"I enjoy it [being a service provider] for now, and I feel incredibly lucky to have found this opportunity to stay home with my son. But I'd like to get to a point where I write for myself and my personal projects. That is a leap I haven't figured out how to make...it makes me nervous."

Lucinda Reynolds shared her aspirations with me, too, saying:

"While I do really enjoy being a service provider, I do have aspirations of creating my own information products to increase my income. I would love to eventually write mainly for myself and do two or three copywriting jobs a month. My biggest dream has always been to write a novel."

While writing for others is one way you can definitely earn money at home, I'm not sure I can promote it as a business model that you should turn to for a long-term plan. Writing for others as a business isn't always fun and easy. It's tough. It's tiring. It's nerve-wracking.

Do you think writing is a viable home-based business option? Why/why not?

How To Make Your First $100 Online - Fast, And For Less Than $20 - Part 1

How To Make Your First $100 Online - Fast, And For Less Than $20 - Part 1

How To Make Your First $100 Online - Fast, And For Less Than $20 - Part 1
By Rebecca Prescott

Don't be put off from the fact that it will cost you less than $20 to get started. That $20 actually covers a domain name and 1 month hosting, so it's an investment that will allow you to build an income easily up to $300 or $500 a month. You may even make more, but I'm setting realistic targets here, based on my own experience.

The first $100 I made online, way back in 2003, was using adsense. These days you have a lot more choice. You can use different contextual advertising companies. You can even get paid per visitor to your site - whether they click on your ads or not.

There are many ways to actually make $100, but I firmly believe adsense is the easiest. Why? Because you don't have to learn about writing a killer sales letter to sell a product or entice people to sign up to your list. You don't need to spend weeks or months developing a product. You'll be able to create something unique, so you don't have the trouble of competing against a lot of affiliates.

Earning money from adsense requires less skill, and has the shortest learning curve of all methods. And the beauty of it is, you can use the site you create to add in different revenue streams later, when you're ready.

The steps I'm about to describe involve creating a content site. But we're going to take a few shortcuts, so you're earning money fast. And we're not going to spend too much time worrying about choosing a topic. Think of this as an assignment in class. Give yourself a deadline. You'll work faster, and see results faster. You can fine tune the details later. This is a 'learn as you earn' way to develop an experiential knowledge of what works online, and how it works.

Here is an overview of those steps. You can use it as a checklist or blueprint.

1. Choose a topic
2. Get your keywords
3. Organize your keywords into a site blueprint
4. Set up your domain name and web hosting
5. Install your free content management system
6. Write your home page article
7. Write your main category articles
8. Write 3 to 5 articles in each category
9. Apply for adsense if you are not already a publisher
10. Get traffic: Write an article on the same subject as one of your article pages and submit to the main article directories
11. Get traffic: Repeat this for all your articles and category pages
12. Get traffic: Find relevant blogs to comment on, leaving your main url in the comment form
13. Get traffic: Find relevant forums to post your comments on, leaving your url in your signature
14. Get traffic: Submit your site to the free web directories
15. Add more articles, and get more links to them.

I'll be going into more detail on how to do these steps in the other articles in this series.

If you don't have a website, and don't know how to install and set up a free content management system, check out these Joomla tutorial videos. They take you step by step through the whole process, in an easy to understand manner. And there's a special bonus if you're one of the first 250 people to purchase: http://www.joomla.pickthebusiness.com Rebecca Prescott is the author of many business, health, and pet websites.

How Your Home Business Keeps You Healthy

How Your Home Business Keeps You Healthy

How Your Home Business Keeps You Healthy
By Cindy Floyd

It made me smile this morning as I was listening to the Today Show. We all know there are many benefits to having a home based business; but while watching the interview with Bruce Weinstein of BusinessWeek.com talk about how over 46 million Americans do not receive sick pay, as a home business owner I had to smile.

I don't have any statistics to provide you that shows people who work from home are healthier than those that go to an office building everyday that filters old stale air day after day. But it should be obvious, home business owners have an advantage. They do not have to deal with dirty air or sick people sitting next to them everyday passing on those cold and flu germs.

Productivity

Bruce was really talking about the ethics of someone going to work sick. Unfortunately, when their employer can not or does not pay for that time off employees are forced to show up for work sick if they expect to get paid.

It makes you wonder since we all know that when you do not feel well you are not very productive. You can not think clearly and you spend more time focused on not feeling good.

When you're the boss you can stay home, you can pay yourself sick pay and you can stay in bed and get better. This is better for your health and everyone you dealing with daily. Not stressing your body by going into work will increase your recovery time, allowing you to get back to more productive business activities sooner.

Increased Home Start Ups

This is just another reason why there is such a huge influx of new home business startups everyday. Parents with young children have a difficult decision every time their children or they get sick. Daycare will not take the child and their boss is not going to pay them to stay home to care for them.

This is a huge benefit for parents with young children. Working from home allows parents to meet both needs: care for their ill child while building a business.

This is not to say that people who work from home do not get sick, they most certainly do. But not being exposed to all those germs day after day during the cold and flu season certainly gives them a better chance of staying healthy.

So if you're looking for one more reason to start your own home business then look to your health. Having the ability to make your own choice is rewarding, and ultimately more productive to your business.

Cindy is a home based business entrepreneur with 15 years experience in owning Real Estate and Network Marketing businesses.

Brian Tracy's "How to OUTSELL your competition -- in any market!"

Outselling Your Competition +

Bonus CDs!

An excerpt from Brian Tracy's The Art of Closing The Sale:

Click Here to Order Your Outselling Your Competition plus Bonus CDs!

Nine Objections You Must Answer:

1. Unspoken Objections

The first type of objection you will get is an unspoken objection. The customer has concerns with your offering but doesn't tell you anything. He or she nods and listens to you, but you get no feedback to tell you where you are or how you are doing.

The solution to unspoken objections is to let the prospect talk more. Ask open-ended questions, lean forward, and listen intently to the answers. The more a prospect has an opportunity to answer your questions, the more likely it is that she will tell you exactly what might be holding her back from buying.

2. Excuses, Excuses

The second form of objections is excuses. These are usually instinctive reactions to any sales approach.

"We already have all we need."

"We are really not interested at the moment."

These are just excuses. They are really not serious. The best salespeople nod, smile, agree, and then ask a question to take control of the conversation. The very best way to handle any initial sales resistance, including excuses and impulse is with these words: "That's all right.

Most people in your situation felt the same way when I first called on them. But now they have become our best customers, and they recommend us to their friends." This response immediately shifts the focus of the conversation away from your product and onto other satisfied customers. It almost invariably triggers the response you want: "Oh really, What is it, then?"

3. Malicious Objections

Then there are the malicious objections. Because you call on many different people, you will occasionally call on individuals who are unhappy or angry about their current situations. Since they cannot shout at their bosses or spouses, they take it out on the friendly salesperson.

These people tend to be negative in their demeanor and behavior. They criticize your product or compare it unfavorably to those of your competitors. They sometimes imply that you charge too much or that your product is not pf particularly good quality.

The way to deal with malicious objections is to realize that you are not the target. The person you are talking to has problems of his own that have nothing to do with you. You are just caught in the emotional crossfire between him and other factors in his life. You job, as a professional, is to remain calm, confident, positive, and polite throughout. Very often this behavior on your part will soften the negativity of the prospect and eventually encourage him to open up to you.

4. Requests for Information

The fourth most common objection is a request for information. This is the best type of objection for you to hear, because you know how to answer this as well or better than any other part of your presentation. Whenever a prospect asks for information about the results or benefits she will get from your product or service and how she can get them, you are moving into excellent field position to make a sale.

Use all your objection-handling skills. Welcome the objection. Compliment the person for asking the question. Thank her for bringing it up. And then answer it completely, ending with, "Does that answer your question?"

Click Here to Order Your Outselling Your Competition plus Bonus CDs!

5. Show- Off Objections

Another type of objection is the show-off objection. Sometimes prospects try to show you how much they already know about your product or service. They make sophisticated observations or ask you complex questions about your product, service, or industry.

When this happens, respond by taking the low road. Show how impressed you are by how much the prospect already knows. Dominate the listening and let the prospect dominate the talking. Be conciliatory and polite. Remember, when you make a prospect feel important by listening to him with rapt attention, he is much more likely to warm up to buy from you.

6. Subjective Objections

The sixth most common type of objections are subjective or personal objections. These objections are aimed at you as a person. Prospects say things such as, "You look like you are doing pretty well in this business." Ort "You seem to be making a lot of money selling this product."

Whenever a person becomes critical of you, it could be a sign that you are talking too much about yourself. The prospect is attempting to bring you down a little bit by criticizing your appearance or behavior.

When you find yourself talking too much about your company, your product or service, or your personal life, stop and ask a question. Start talking about the customer rather than yourself. Ask questions about what the customer wants and needs. Make the customer the center of attention, and the subjective objections will stop.

7. Objective Objections

You may also hear the objective or factual objection. These are directed at your product offering and the claims that you make in terms of what it will do for the customer. The prospect may say, "I don't think that it will do the job that we require." Or "It looks good, but it's not satisfactory for our needs."

If you can answer an objective objection, you can often get the sale. The very best way to do this is to provide testimonials an other proof that make it clear that your product will do what you say it will. Assure the prospect that she will get the benefits that you promise and you have just made it easier for her to buy from you.

8. General Sales Resistance

The eighth most common form of objection is what we have called general sales resistance. This always occurs at the beginning of a presentation. Until you neutralize the general sales resistance, the customer will be listening to you with a closed mind.

Lower initial sales resistance by using the approach close. Say, "Mr. Prospect, thank you very much for your time. Please relax. I'm not going to try to sell you anything today. All I want to do is ask you some questions and see if there is some way that my company can help you achieve your goals in a cost-effective way. Would that be all right?"

When the prospect relaxes and gives you permission to ask him questions, you immediately begin your preselected open-ended questions to qualify the prospect and find out what he really needs that you can provide for him.

9. Last-Ditch

The final most-common objection is called the last-ditch objection. You have make your presentation, and the prospect clearly sees how she would be better off with your product or service. She knows and understands what you are selling and how much you are asking. She is on the verge of making a buying decision, but she still hesitates.

"How do I know I'm getting my money's worth?" she might say. Or "Are you sure this is the best deal I can get?" Listen with respect; then assure the prospect that yours is an excellent product or service, at a good price, and that everyone else who is using it today is very happy with their decision.

You have then overcome the last-ditch objection.

Home Business Deductions - Everyone Needs A Home Based Business!

AchievementRadio.com's

Home Business Deductions - Everyone Needs A Home Based Business!

Home Business Deductions - Everyone Needs A Home Based Business!
By Viola Bontrager

With all the home business deductions and tax write offs, EVERYONE needs a home based business.

According to Ronald R. Mueller, author of the bestseller "It's How Much You KEEP, That Counts! Not how much you Make."- The average American who runs a home based business, either part time or full time, can qualify for so many home business deductions and tax write offs, that it is folly to NOT become involved in some sort of network marketing or home business.

If you can meet a couple simple tests:

  • Have a legitimate business, internet or network marketing, child care, direct sales, etc.
  • Work your business regularly for at least 45 min. to an hour a day, 4 - 5 days a week.
  • Keep record of your business expenses, income and activity

  • You can qualify for some huge home business deductions and tax write offs, which can greatly reduce your taxes and actually INCREASE the amount of your tax return.

Some of the home business deductions include but are not limited to:

  • Business use of vehicles, such as mileage when you run to the bank or P.O. - in fact , with a home business, you can literally turn many of those trips to town into a business expense!

  • Percentage of rent, mortgage, phone, gas, water, heat and other utilities

  • cell phones, blackberry's, computers,printers,etc

  • Vacations - ESPECIALLY if you are in a travel related home based business. Turn ALL your vacationing into a tax deduction plus get paid while you travel as you can take your business with you in the form of a laptop and a cell phone!

  • These are just some of the home business deductions and if you go to IRS dot com, you will be able to get more detailed information or simply talk to a small business accountant in your area.

The average American saves anywhere from $2000 - $7000 in taxes by owning a home based business.

Unleash The Power Of MySpace Comments

Unleash The Power Of MySpace Comments
    By Dave Diotalevi

Are you getting the most out of your MySpace comments?

Chances are that you're either ignoring them altogether, underutilizing their potential, or just playing with them sporadically.

MySpace comments are the second most important element of your MySpace presence. The first, of course, is your own profile. This is where you show yourself to the world of friends and potential friends. Your profile IS you to MySpacers--so give it your own unique, unusual twists that show off your personality. This is where others can discover who you truly are ... or at least who you want peole to THINK you are! LOL!

The other most important tool in your socializing bag of tricks is how you make comments on others' profiles.

You do this in 3 important ways:

    1. Profile comments

    2. Photo comments

    3. Blog comments

Which is THE most important? That depends on your objectives and motivations. These can include:

    * Pure socializing--you just want to truly BE a friend and show interest and support for a person, business, or organization.

    * Networking--you "get out there" to draw attention to yourself and build an interconnected circle of contacts for future use and benefits.

*Marketing--you've got something to sell; you want to not only draw attention, but turn that into interest, followed by a desire for your product, and then finally convert that desire into a sale.

The most visible comment is the basic profile comment. This shows up right on the main profile page after you scroll down past the list of friends. Most underutiize its power by just saying, "Thanks for the add." This is by far the most common--and most invisible of all comments. Quit it! Be more inventive and productive!

Think how much a personal and meaningful comment on your own profile affects you. When someone actually LOOKED at your page and made a thoughtful comment about your personal expressions--how did that make YOU feel? I bet pretty good.

Do the same for others. Let them know they're really a person, not just another faceless, interchangeable cyberentity.

Besides your message, you can utilize HTML to leave an image. Be inventive; it can be funny, inspirational, or sales-oriented.

If it IS a marketing message, do your selling AFTER you write something personal and meaningful. Sell in a sig-type ending to your comment.

Profile comments get seen by far more MySpace traffic than any other. That's why there are so many of them compared to the other two I'll discuss.

The second type of comments are for photos. We're ALL curious about what's below the surface of that hot or interesting ID pic that drew us in! So--you click the Pics link and voila! There are your friend's albums.

What do you say here? Most pics never get a comment--poor things! Here are photos that people posed for and thought enough of to upload for the world. I know, I know--you can't comment on everything. But, every once in a while, make a comment just for the benefit of your friend. You're not marketing here (unless you're trying to sell to this ONE person--in THAT case, this comment can be VERY powerful), so make it something YOU would want to hear from someone about something you're proud of.

The final MySpace location for comments is on your friend's blog. If your yourself blog, you know what time and effort it takes to try and coherently put your thoughts together about any subject, activity, or opinion. It's painstaking work. You do it to express yourself and hope others take notice.

A blog comment shows that you've actually taken the time to READ someone's blog (HURRAY!). It shows those thoughts affected you in some way--affected you enough to react and reflect back with yor own words.

    Very powerful.

So--why are you still reading this when you can be out there on MySpace commenting?
